Cycloconverter Drives in Mining Applications: A Typical Industrial System Is Analyzed and the Impact of Harmonic Filtering Considered

ABSTRACT:

The trend toward increased throughput on trendy mining comes is driving grinding mill sizes to bigger levels than ever before. The drives needed to power these mills exceed the ability capable of being delivered through ring-geared systems [1]. An alternate answer has been the appliance of wraparound (gearless) drives fed from cycloconverter adjustable speed systems. However, the harmonics generated from the cycloconverters provide unique problems, particularly if not properly filtered. This article takes a take a look at the special nature of cycloconverter drives and their application on massive copper concentrators. It additionally considers the special necessities of harmonic filtering that these drives introduce and the issues associated with unfiltered power factor correction (PFC) to neighboring facilities. A typical industrial system is analyzed, and therefore the impact of harmonic filtering is considered. This article discusses IEEE Normal 519 [2] and its inability to adequately address the issue of interharmonics and, consequently, the need for acceptable guidelines.
