Transmit Radiation Pattern Invariance in MIMO Radar With Application to DOA Estimation

ABSTRACT:

The desired property of getting the same beampattern for various columns of a beamspace transformation matrix (beamforming vectors) typically plays a key importance in sensible applications. At most 2M - one - 1 beamforming vectors with the same beampattern can be generated from any given beamforming vector, where M is the size of the beamforming vector. Thus, one can begin with one (mother) beamforming vector, that offers a desired beampattern, however might not satisfy another desired properties, and generate all different beamforming vectors, that give the same beampattern, in a computationally economical manner. Then the beamforming vectors, which in addition satisfy alternative desired properties that the mother beamforming vector could not satisfy, will be selected. Such procedure is developed during this letter in the application to the transmit beamspace design that ensures practically vital properties for multiple-input multiple-output radar. A computationally economical sub-optimal methodology for selecting best beamforming vectors from a population of vectors that provide the same beampattern is additionally developed.
