PROJECT TITLE :

Understanding openness

ABSTRACT:

Several, several years ago I gave a speak at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. I keep in mind nothing of that day aside from a passing comment created by the speaker before me, a software pioneer. He said that the greatest achievement of the pc business wasn't the non-public laptop however the concept of an open platform on which third parties could innovate, which this open platform was what the telecom industry lacked. I thought this was a silly factor to say. It had been easy enough for the pc industry to standardize the communications bus in a very very little steel box, but it would be quite another issue to make an open platform from a worldwide network made up of a myriad of different technologies. This would never happen.
